Men’s doubles shuttlers Aaron-Wooi Yik one victory away from Super 1000 glory

A job well done: Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik beat India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty 21-13, 21-17 in the last four.

PETALING JAYA: Men’s doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik have an opportunity to end their long wait for a World Tour Super 1000 title when they take on Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian-Shohibul Fikri in the China Open final today.

Yesterday, Aaron-Wooi Yik continued their great run in the tourney by beating India’s 2022 Asian Games gold medallists Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty 21-13, 21-17 in the last four at the Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium in Changzhou.

The world No. 2 pair played brilliantly from start to finish to come away with the win in 42 minutes. It was their 11th victory in 14 meetings over the Indian duo.

Aaron-Wooi Yik are now just one step away from a maiden Super 1000 crown and will be keen to make amends after finishing runners-up to home favourites and Paris Olympics silver medallists Liang Weikeng-Wang Chang in the 2023 China Open.

However, they face a tricky task against surprise finalists Fajar-Shohibul, who are only playing in their second tournament together.

The Indonesians stunned Weikeng-Wang Chang 21-19, 21-17 in the other semi-final match and will be no pushovers.

The duo are out to capture their fourth title of the year after triumphing in the Asian Championships, Singapore Open and Thailand Open.

Aaron-Wooi Yik will also be keen to give themselves a huge boost before the World Championships from Aug 25-31 in Paris.
