Wei Jie digs deep to reach International Challenge semis

PETALING JAYA: Singles shuttler Tiew Wei Jie showed grit to battle into the semi-finals of the Malaysian Junior International Challenge after surviving a stern test on Friday (July 24).

Wei Jie fought back from a game down to beat Indonesia’s Yudha Rendra Wijaya 14-21, 21-18, 21-13 in a gripping one-hour, 10-minute quarter-final at Stadium Titiwangsa.

Said Wei Jie: "I just stayed focused throughout the match."

He said that his determination to win kept him motivated until the final point.

Lim Boon Le also made it to the semi-finals after taking down Indonesia’s Alif Akbar 21-18, 21-15. 

Meanwhile, in the mixed doubles, Isyraf Hafizin-Lee Joinne advanced to the last four after overcoming Indonesia’s Azka Ghani Putri Wardhana-Genta Restu Handika 12-21, 24-22, 21-11.

Isyraf and Joinne credited their victory to strong teamwork throughout the match.

“We didn’t play well in the opening game, but we kept believing in ourselves and fought back to win,” said Isyraf.

In the women’s singles, Lee Kay Xin also progressed to the next round after defeating teammate Jang Sher Ling 21-12, 14-21, 21-18.
