PETALING JAYA: Newly formed national mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Clarissa San put on a stunning performance but ultimately went down fighting to world No. 2 Chinese pair Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin at the China Open second round on Thursday (July 23).
Scratch pair Tang Jie-Clarissa, who are competing in only their second tournament together, came agonisingly close to notching a huge upset, but second seeds Zhengbang-Yaxin pulled through in the end to win 11-21, 21-14, 21-19 in 54 minutes at the Changzhou Olympic Sports Centre.
Tang Jie-Clarissa had made their way into the second round after defeating world No. 32 German’s Marvin Seidel-Thuc Phuong Nguyen 21-17, 21-19 in the opening round.
The Malaysians made their debut at the Japan Open last week, where they bowed out in the first round after falling to Taiwan’s Yang Po-hsuan-Hu Ling-fang.
Meanwhile, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie saw their run end after fifth seeds Guo Xinwa-Chen Fanghui of China beat them 23-21, 21-15 in the second round.
