PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles shuttler Chen Tang Jie will be on a double duty after his split with Toh Ee Wei.
Tang Jie will play with Chan Wen Tse in the mixed doubles but the surprise came with the decision to field him in the men's doubles with Wong Vin Sean.
World No. 4 Tang Jie-Ee Wei were split on Friday (March 28) as coaches led by Nova Widianto had reported that they were not complimenting each other, following fall-out during matches.
National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky said the 27-year-old Tang Jie had showed interest in the men’s doubles.
"Tang Jie did request to play in both the mixed and men’s doubles. As it involved two departments, I had to speak with coach Nova and doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi.
"After discussion with coaches, Herry did say he needed a doubles player, and we decided to team up Tang Jie with Vin Sean.
They will compete in the Taiwan Open and Thailand Open," said Rexy.
Rexy admitted it wasn't easy to find suitable partners.
"Tang Jie is strong at the back in the mixed doubles with Ee Wei, and we had to find someone who were good at the front," said Rexy.
The 21-year-old Vin Sean had been playing with Goh Boon Zhe in the men’s doubles and both have reached the final of the Sri Lanka International Series recently, but they did not qualify for the Taiwan and Thailand Opens.
"So that left room for Tang Jie to play with Vin Sean at those two tournaments, and I'm glad Herry had approved this move," said Rexy.
