Pros Goh-Shevon get call up but it's no for Zii Jia, Sze Fei-Izzuddin as BAM name mixed team

KUALA LUMPUR: Top shuttlers such as professional Lee Zii Jia, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, and Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah will not compete in the upcoming Asia Mixed Team Championship in Qingdao, China, next month.

In fact, reigning Indian Open champions Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani have also not been included.

Instead, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have selected a team comprising a mix of young talents and experienced players to represent the nation.

In the men’s singles category, Malaysia will rely on Leong Jun Hao and Justin Hoh. The men’s doubles pairs are Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Yap Roy King-Wan Arif Junaidi.

For the women’s singles, K. Letshanaa and Wong Li Ching will lead the charge. The women’s doubles will feature Tan Zhing Yi, who recently transitioned to doubles, partnering Cheng Su Hui, along with Teoh Mei Xing-Go Pei Kee.

In mixed doubles, professionals Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jamie Lai will make their much-anticipated return after last competing in the 2017 edition held in Hong Kong.

Another pair bolstering the squad is Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin.

National coaching director Rexy Mainaky said the decision to rest key players was made due to their packed competition schedules.

“Our core players are preparing for a busy calendar, and this tournament provides an excellent platform for back-up players to gain experience and prove themselves,” said Rexy.

Malaysia have been drawn into Group B with Indonesia, Hong Kong China, and Kazakhstan.
