Badminton: Mixed fortunes for Tang Jie-Ee Wei, Pang Ron-Su Yin in Indian Open

PETALING JAYA: It was a good day for mixed doubles shuttlers Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei when they made it into the Indian Open second round but teammates Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin crashed out early.

Tang Jie-Ee Wei, who reached a career-high No. 3 in the latest world rankings, were in commanding form as they secured a 21-15, 21-16 win over Taiwan's Ye Hong-wei-Nicole Chan at the KD Jadhav Indoor Stadium in New Delhi on Tuesday (Jan 14).

The pair have a tougher test next though against either Thailand's Malaysian Open champions Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran or Hong Kong's new pairing Tang Chun Man-Ng Tsz Yau.

Meanwhile, world No. 18 Pang Ron-Su Yin suffered another early exit after going down 18-21, 15-21 to Japan's world No. 13 Hiroki Midorikawa-Natsu Saito.

The former also endured a disappointing debut in the Malaysian Open when they lost to Taiwan's Lu Ming-che-Hung En-tzu in the first round.

In the men's doubles, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun's campaign ended early as well.

The world No. 14 pair went down fighting to home favourites and 2022 Asian Games champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty 21-23, 21-19, 16-21 in 75 minutes.

There were better fortunes though for world No. 23 Yap Roy King-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi after they brushed past Germany's Marvin Seidel-Daniel Hess 21-11, 21-8.

The youngsters will next take on fellow Malaysians and world No. 2 Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani for a place in the last eight.
