Indonesia's Hendra Setiawan retiring from badminton after over 30 years


PETALING JAYA: Veteran Indonesian men’s doubles shuttler Hendra Setiawan has announced his retirement from the sport.

His final tournament will be the Indonesian Masters in January.

The 40-year-old made the announcement on Tuesday (Dec 3), ending a career that spanned over 30 years since he took up the sport at age seven.

“I think it is the right time to end my career as a badminton athlete.

“Thank you so much to all the fans who have supported me from the past till now,” he said.

Hendra and partner Mohammad Ahsan claimed the 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medal, and have four World Championships (2007, 2013, 2015, 2019) under their belts.

The pair also won two Asian Games gold medals (2010, 2014), as well as two All-England titles (2014, 2019).
