Siti Nurshuhaini vows to make amends at SEA Games

PETALING JAYA: National women’s singles shuttler Siti Nurshuhaini Azman is eyeing redemption in the SEA Games in Cambodia from May 5-17 after a disappointing debut in the last edition.

Nurshuhaini was eliminated in the preliminary round of the individual event in Vietnam last year and was also part of the team that shockingly went down 1-3 to the hosts in the quarter-finals of the team competition.

The 19-year-old has again been selected for both events and has vowed to make amends.

“I don’t want to waste this opportunity again,” said Nurshuhaini.

“I’m aiming to at least reach the semi-finals of the individual event this time

“I believe that the lessons learned in my debut Games will help me in my goal.’’

The other women’s singles shuttlers selected for the SEA Games are Tan Zhing Yi (No. 107), Wong Ling Ching (No. 156) and Ong Xin Yee (No. 419).

Zhing Yi will join Nurshuhaini in the individual event.

The latter had seen her progress hampered by heel and hamstring injuries at the end of last year.

Nurshuhaini, ranked 193rd in the world, made her comeback from injury at the Uganda International Challenge in Kampala last week but did not progress beyond the early rounds.

She is hoping for better fortunes when she plays in the Under-21 National Championships in Perak from March 15-19.

“I hope to win my first title of the year in Perak and give myself a boost ahead of the SEA Games.

“I’ve also been registered for the Vietnam International Challenge (March 21-26) but I’m not sure if I can qualify for it.”
