PETALING JAYA: National sprinter Mohd Azeem Fahmi is set to pursue a master's degree at Malaysia's oldest university, Universiti Malaya (UM).

Azeem, who recently completed his studies at Auburn University in Alabama, paid a courtesy visit to UM, where he was welcomed by vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman.

“Prof Datuk Seri Ir Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman, vice-chancellor of Universiti Malaya, received a courtesy visit from national sprinter Mohd Azeem Fahmi at his office today (Monday),” UM said in a social media post.

“Also present at the meeting were the dean of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Sciences, Associate Prof Dr Zulkarnain Jaafar, and Sports Centre director Afizal Abu Othman.

“The vice-chancellor also expressed his commitment to ensuring the best possible pathway for Azeem to pursue his master's degree at Universiti Malaya.''

UM has long been a popular choice among the country's top athletes, with distinguished alumni including diving stars Datuk Pandelela Rinong, Ooi Tze Liang and Bryan Nickson Lomas.

Former national women's doubles shuttler Vivian Hoo also studied at the university, graduating with a Bachelor of Sports Science degree in 2019.

Azeem enjoyed a successful outing at the Malaysian Open last week at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Serdang, where he won gold in the men's 100m and 4x100m relay alongside Danish Iftikhar Mohd Roslee, Pengiran Aidil Auf Hajam and Mohd Armin Zahryl.

The 21-year-old moved to the United States in January 2023 to study exercise physiology and kinesiology at Auburn University, where he also trained under coach Ken Harnden.
