PETALING JAYA: The 40-year-old national record in the men’s 3,000m has finally been broken after Kristian Tung clocked a new mark of eight minutes 15.81 seconds at the BMC Record Breaker meet at Tooting Bec Athletics Track in London on Thursday (Aug 21).

Although he only finished 15th in the race, his time was enough to crown him as the new national record holder in the 3,000m.

The previous record of 8:27.00, set in London on June 18, 1985, had stood for more than four decades and was held by S. Mutiah.

Kristian had already made waves at last year’s Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Sarawak, where he bagged three gold medals in the 1,500m, 5,000m and 10,000m.
