GOLD COAST: Malaysian high jumpers Lee Hup Wei and Nauraj Singh Randhawa qualified for the men’s high jump final at the Commonwealth Games.
Both the athletes cleared the height of 2.21m in the qualifying rounds at the Carrara Stadium on Monday.
Twenty athletes competed in the event and 13 qualified for the final for managing to the height of 2.21m. The final is schedule on Wednesday.
Hup Wei, who will turn 31 on May 5, is happy to qualify for his second final at the Games.
“I finished fifth in last Games in Glasgow four years ago with a height of 2.23m. But this time I want to go one better in Gold Coast,” said Hup Wei, who has a personal best of 2.28m which he achieved in the ACT Championships in Canberra in January.
Nauraj, who is in the Podium Programme and has a personal best of 2.30m, said that he got the feel of the surface and will use what he can for the final.
“This championships comes only once in four years and I do not want to waste this opportunity,” said the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games gold medallist.
