All over for Malaysia in archery

Malaysian archer Nurul Azreena Mohd Fazil

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's campaign in Olympic archery ended with the last representative Nurul Azreena Mohd Fazil failing to clear her first round hurdle in the women's individual recurve event on Thursday.

The event at Les Invalides, which was postponed by one day due to bad weather, saw Azreena beaten 0-6 by Elif Berra Gokkir from Turkiye.

Nerves got the better of the 20-year-old Olympic debutant as she lost 27-29, 22-27 and 25-27.

Out of the three archers representing the country, only Syaqiera Mashayikh manage to advance to the second round (1/16 elimination), after defeating Alexandra Mirca from Moldova 6-0 earlier in the week. However, she lost 5-6 to Ana Luiza Sliachticas Caetano from Brazil after a shoot-off.

Ariana Nur Diana Mohamad Zairi, 19, also gave a tough fight to world No. 9 Chiara Rebagliati from Italy before losing 5-6 through a shoot-off in another first round elimination match.

In the women's team event, the Malaysian trio lost 3-5 to Indonesia last Sunday.
