THE recent call by CEO Dario Amodei of Anthropic, which builds artificial intelligence (AI) system Claude, to slow the development of increasingly powerful AI systems raises an important question. As AI becomes more capable and autonomous, there are concerns that safety research and regulation may not be keeping pace. Slowing down sounds sensible. But can we actually do it?
The difficulty is that AI development is also a global race. OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and others are competing for users, investment, talent, and technological leadership. A company may genuinely believe that greater caution is needed, but what happens if it slows down while its competitors forge ahead at speed?
