Protect nature for a climate resilient future

THE world marks World Environment Day today with the theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future”, which reflects the growing global commitment to place nature and sustainability at the centre of climate solutions.

Healthy ecosystems and thriving wildlife populations are essential for maintaining ecological balance, strengthening climate resilience and safeguarding the future of coming generations.

On this World Environment Day, Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) calls on the government to reaffirm its commitments to strengthening wildlife conservation and habitat protection by intensifying efforts to safeguard endangered species, restore degraded ecosystems, combat illegal wildlife trade and enhance management of protected areas.

Conserving forests, wetlands, coastal habitats and biodiversity corridors is essential not only for preserving wildlife but also for maintaining ecological stability and strengthening natural carbon sinks that mitigate climate change.

CAP also calls for stronger collaboration among governments, industries, civil society and local communities to promote environmental policies and practices that integrate sustainability into development planning and economic growth.

This includes advancing responsible land use, mainstream agroecology, renewable energy adoption, waste reduction and environmentally responsible business practices that reduce ecological footprints while supporting long-term resilience.

Restoring mangroves, forests, peat lands and river systems can help reduce flooding, coastal erosion, drought and extreme heat while enhancing biodiversity and improving food and water security. Investing in nature-based and community-driven solutions provides cost-effective and sustainable solutions that benefit both people and the planet.

Equally important is the need to encourage public awareness and community participation in the responsible use, management and protection of the natural environment. Education, advocacy campaigns, volunteerism and community-driven conservation programmes can foster a stronger sense of shared responsibility and inspire collective action towards a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.

Governments, businesses, organisations and citizens must work together to ensure that climate commitments are supported by practical conservation efforts and sustainable policies that protect both people and biodiversity.
