AS a septuagenarian since a year ago, one of the worst scenarios I have seen is someone who had been active while working, retiring and becoming resigned to a life of physical and mental inactivity. I know individuals who had this sudden decline in physical and mental activity, and I believe in some cases it contributed to their premature death.
Inactivity leaves seniors more vulnerable to a range of serious illnesses. As people age, declining immunity and a slower metabolism make their bodies more susceptible to infections caused by bacteria and viruses. So we need to give the body all the help possible to fight diseases, and keeping it active is an important part of that.
