Learn from Swiss fire so it never happens in Malaysia


I READ the news about the Dec 31 fire at the Le Constellation nightspot in Switzerland with much despair. The fire took 40 lives and seriously injured 119 people. I felt this deeply on a personal level – it could have been me as I am a regular in similar establishments.

International media reports, corroborated with video footage, say that sparks from sparklers blew onto foam sound insulation and ignited the fire (“Sparklers blamed for deadly Swiss bar fire”, The Star, Jan 3; online at bit.ly/star_swiss). Sparklers have been made famous at celebrations by influencers around the globe, and now they have proved to be extremely hazardous.
