Independence begins in the mind

AUGUST carries a special meaning for Malaysia. The Jalur Gemilang waves proudly from buildings, homes and vehicles. Patriotic songs echo through the air across radio, television and social media, inviting us to reflect on what independence truly means for us as a people and as a nation. Our symbols remind us that independence is not only to be celebrated but also to be honoured in how we uphold and respect them.

Recently, however, we have witnessed instances where the Jalur Gemilang was displayed incorrectly. Such incidents naturally stir strong emotions, but they must not be blown out of proportion. We should remember that the flag is ultimately a unifying symbol of patriotism, shaping an imagined community bound by shared identity.
