Drug abuse still at alarming levels

IT was in 1983 that the Malaysian government under then prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed declared drug abuse and trafficking as the number one enemy of the nation.

An ambitious counter narcotics effort was launched, and it subsequently earned a reputation as one of the toughest programmes in the world, according to a declassified report by the Central Intelligence Agency.
