Persons with Disabilities Act must have teeth

THE Malaysian Alliance of Civil Society Organisations (Macsa), a coalition of 60 non-governmental and civil society organisations, is concerned about the safety of people with disabilities (PWD) using public transport after the recent incident where a blind man was killed after falling onto the railway track at the Titiwangsa station and run over by a Light Rail Transit (LRT) train.

A report by Persatuan Orang-Orang Cacat Penglihatan Islam Malaysia (Pertis), one of our coalition partners, back in 2018 revealed that since the Persons with Disabilities Act 2008 (Act 685) was gazetted on Jan 24, 2008, no fewer than seven accidents in public areas involving blind people had been reported.
