From a physician’s perspective

MY FIRST glimpse of this “giant” of a man, was on an auspicious Aug 31, 1957, when I was posted for duty at the Merdeka Stadium as a young medical officer. Tunku was proclaiming “Merdeka” in that familiar photograph now recorded for posterity.

Ten years later, we met in person, unfortunately not under the happiest of circumstances. As the personal physician to the late Yang di-Pertua Pulau Pinang Tun Syed Sheh Shahabudin, I was then treating the TYT (the Governor) who had suffered a heart attack on the golf course. Fortunately, as we were playing on the same flight, he was resuscitated on the spot before being rushed to the General Hospital.
