Najib Razak: From prisoner to political symbol

Datuk Seri Najib Razak, once a towering figure in Malaysian politics, has emerged as an unlikely unifying symbol amidst simmering discontent with the current administration led by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Najib’s resurgence, however, may not be necessarily rooted in a re-evaluation of his leadership or policies but rather in the frustrations of a populace feeling increasingly disillusioned with the promises of reform that Anwar's government has failed to deliver.

For many Malaysians, particularly within the Malay community, Najib has become a symbol of their frustration and dissatisfaction with the ruling coalition. Despite several major political shifts—from Barisan Nasional under Najib, to Pakatan Harapan under Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, to Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin under Perikatan Nasional, and now Anwar under the Madani government—all occurring in less than a decade, there is a widespread belief that the best times were during Najib's tenure as prime minister.
