Don't be influenced by outdated racial thinking, PM Anwar urges Malaysians

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians, particularly the younger generation, must reject narrow racial sentiments, as such attitudes could undermine national unity and stability, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In a speech on Sunday (May 10), the Prime Minister said the younger generation should not be influenced by outdated racial thinking.

“You do not necessarily represent the archaic racist sentiments of many past generations. This country cannot stand, nor continue to tolerate, such excesses.

“Yes, it takes time and requires patience. If you address one issue, for example, today, if I say something in the interest of the Indians, there will be certain factions of extremist Malays who will relentlessly attack me on social media.

“In the midst of political turmoil and criticism, we sometimes lose sight of our cause, especially when racial sentiments are used so strongly,” he said during a meet-and-greet session with Indian undergraduates at Universiti Malaya.

He added that political discourse in Malaysia is often challenged by divisive rhetoric that could damage the country’s social fabric.

“This is precisely the reason why I am appealing to you, especially the young students here, to look at, to think and reflect.

“What is education after all? To acquire knowledge, disseminate truth and dispense justice through intellectual debate, discussion and discourse. Not sowing discourse of hatred, enmity and discontent,” he said.

Anwar also reminded the Malay community, as the majority, to uphold fairness towards all citizens.

“The Malays must be reminded that although they are the majority, they must always appreciate the fact that every single citizen has his or her rights.

“The Chinese and the Indians can also make their demands. But they must also remember that this nation should not allow such a massive racist reaction that will destroy the very fabric of this society,” he said.

He also cautioned against the rise of extremist politics globally, urging Malaysians not to underestimate its impact.

“Do not take this lightly and dismiss it. In Europe and the United States, countries often described as democratic, there is a rise of the far right and they are winning.

“They win by playing on very strong racial sentiments, generating hatred against the Prime Minister.

“For what reason? Because he is not firm with the Indian community on issues relating to temples or with the Chinese community on issues relating to pig farming

“My friends, however firm we may be, we must respect the culture, beliefs and religions of others.

“At the same time, while we enforce rules and expect compliance, we must not go to the extent of planting resentment or hurting the feelings of those who are carrying out their responsibilities,” he said.
