ABUJA, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people were killed and two others injured in a crash involving three trucks along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Nigeria's southwestern region early Monday, traffic police said.
In a statement, Afolabi Odunsi, spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps in the southwestern state of Ogun, said the incident occurred in Kara, a town along the Ibafo-Lagos corridor of the expressway, when a speeding truck hit another truck, which then rammed into a stationary truck.
Citing a preliminary investigation, Odunsi attributed the crash to "excessive speed."
Lamenting the high rate of fatal road accidents in Africa's most populous country, the traffic police urged motorists to remain vigilant and exercise extra caution, noting that reduced visibility and fatigue could increase the risk of crashes.
Fatal road accidents are common in Nigeria and are often attributed to speeding, overloading, poor road conditions, and reckless driving.
