Burundi announces schedule for 2027 presidential election

BUJUMBURA, May 8 (Xinhua) -- The Burundian Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) on Friday announced that the presidential election is set for May 3, 2027.

During the meeting with representatives of political parties, civil society, religious groups, and representatives of the diplomatic and consular corps and international organizations accredited to Burundi, CENI Chairperson Prosper Ntahorwamiye presented an update on preparations for the 2027 presidential election and the schedule of activities.

"The overall budget for this election amounts to over 115.8 billion Burundian francs (about 38.9 million U.S. dollars)," said Ntahorwamiye.

According to him, the election campaign is scheduled from April 10 to 30, 2027. The election will take place from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. local time.

Ntahorwamiye announced that the Independent Provincial Electoral Commissions will be established in June 2026 and the Independent District Electoral Commissions in July 2026.

The Burundian Constitutional Court will announce the final results on June 16, before the president-elect is sworn in on June 18, 2027, said Ntahorwamiye.

According to Burundi's Constitution, revised in 2018, the president's term is seven years, renewable only once.

Current President Evariste Ndayishimiye, with his first term to end in 2027, was nominated on April 26 by the ruling party, the National Council for the Defense of Democracy-Forces for the Defense of Democracy, as its presidential candidate.
