Tanzania's anti-narcotics authorities seize 767.2 kg of illicit drugs in 2 weeks


DAR ES SALAAM, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's anti-narcotics authorities said on Monday they seized 767.2 kilograms of illicit drugs, including heroin, in three regions in the first two weeks of April.

Aretas Lyimo, the commissioner general for the Drug Control and Enforcement Authority, said the drugs, including 233.2 kg of heroin, 525.67 kg of methamphetamine, and eight kg of a drug called skanka, were seized in Dar es Salaam, Coast and Tanga regions.

"The anti-narcotics authorities also arrested 21 suspects in connection with the drugs," Lyimo told a news conference in the port city of Dar es Salaam.

He said most of the drugs were smuggled into the country through the Indian Ocean.
