QuickCheck: Did an earthquake strike Gerik, Perak?


A TREMOR was reported in the Gerik area of Perak in the early hours of Friday, with residents describing feeling the ground shake.

Earthquakes are not commonly associated with Peninsular Malaysia, making any seismic activity in the region a cause for public attention.

But did an earthquake really strike Gerik, Perak?

Verdict:

TRUE

A weak earthquake measuring 3.4 in magnitude struck Temenggor in Gerik, Perak at 12.06am on Friday (Aug 28), according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

MetMalaysia said the epicentre of the earthquake was located at coordinates 5.5 degrees north, 101.3 degrees east, approximately 9km northeast of Hulu Perak, and was recorded at a depth of 10km.

Tremors were felt in the Gerik area of Perak.

"MetMalaysia will continue to monitor the situation," the department said.

This is not the first time seismic activity has been recorded in Peninsular Malaysia.

On Aug 25, a weak earthquake measuring 3.1 in magnitude struck the waters off Batu Pahat, Johor, also at a depth of 10km.

On June 21, a separate earthquake measuring 3.3 in magnitude struck the same waters off Batu Pahat at 1.17am, again recorded at a depth of 10km.
