Amsterdam boasts more than 160 canals, which are a major attraction, but their steep walls can be dangerous for animals.
Cats and other small animals that fall into the water often struggle to climb out, especially where there is nothing to help them get out.
Is it true that the city is building small staircases along its canals to help cats escape the water?
VERDICT:

TRUE
Reports of drownings have prompted action. In the first half of last year alone, animal welfare group Dierenambulance Amsterdam recorded multiple cases of cats found in the canals. This raised concerns about how dangerous the waterways can be for strays and pets alike.
To address this, the city is investing about €100,000 (RM455,690) to install mini wooden staircases along canal walls. These ladders give animals a way to climb out safely if they fall in.
The authorities are working closely with animal rescuers to place the ladders where accidents happen.
A similar measure has already started in Amersfoort, a city near Amsterdam, where it has put up around 300 tiny ladders.
