QuickCheck: Will MyKad photographs be replaced with a QR code?

The MyKad is not just a confirmation of an individual's Malaysian citizenship. It is also an official document used as a mechanism to distribute subsidies and cash assistance, as well as handling daily tasks such as using public transport.

Given its importance, it is understandable that there are concerns surrounding the next-gen MyKad to be rolled out later this year.

One allegation making the rounds is that the new MyKad will not include a photograph and will only have a QR code.

Is this true?

VERDICT:

False

In a statement, the National Registration Department (JPN) said that improvements to the MyKad are being made in accordance with the National Registration Regulations 1990.

“The regulations stipulate that each identity card must contain certain basic details, including the identity card (IC) number, name and address, citizenship status and the holder’s photograph,” it said in a Facebook post on Friday (April 17).

The public is reminded to stop spreading false news and to refer to JPN’s official channels for accurate information.
