A four-wheel-drive vehicle carrying two suspects involved in communications cable theft crashed into a house at Kampung Parit Panjang in Baling, Kedah, following a car chase with police on Sunday (March 8) at about 12.30am.
A video of the incident has since gone viral online.
Gerik district police chief Superintendent Abdul Samad Othman said the two suspects managed to escape after the crash.
"According to the homeowner, the two men fled on foot after the incident.
"The owner, along with two women, including one who is pregnant, are unharmed," he said in a statement.
Supt Abdul Samad said the two suspects were believed to have been involved in a cable theft incident at Kampung Star Kecil in Kerunai, Gerik on Saturday (March 7) at about 9.50pm.
"At about 11.40pm, a police mobile patrol vehicle from the Pengkalan Hulu station tracked the suspects in a 4WD vehicle at the junction of Taman 1Malaysia and gave chase.
"Another police vehicle from the Gerik district police station assisted in the chase on Jalan Gerik-Kupang until Baling, Kedah," he said.
"During the chase, one of the suspects threw a cable cutter, nails and cables at the police cars," he added.
Supt Abdul Samad said investigations found that the 4WD vehicle was rented.
He said 20 coils of cables, one mobile phone, three cutters and one wrecking bar were recovered at the scene.
"Efforts are now ongoing to track down both suspects," he said, adding that the case would be investigated under Section 379 and Section 186 of the Penal Code for theft and obstructing civil servants from performing their duties.
