But did this incident really happen, and did it end in robbery?

Verdict:

TRUE

A man was seen clinging to the bonnet of a moving car along a road in Seri Alam, Johor Baru, in a viral video on social media, with the incident escalating into extortion and property damage.

Seri Alam OCPD Assistant Commissioner Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said investigations confirmed that the incident took place in the Seri Alam area at about 3.50pm on Saturday (Feb 28).

"The 11-second clip, uploaded on the 'Komuniti Bandar Seri Alam' social media account, showed a man holding on to the exterior of a moving vehicle," he said on Sunday (March1).

"Preliminary investigations found that the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding between the man and a woman, who is believed to be his former wife," he said.

ACP Mohd Sohaimi added that at about 3.30pm on the same day, an argument reportedly began between the suspect and the victim at a supermarket in Bandar Seri Alam before escalating onto the road.

"The man climbed onto the bonnet and held on to the front of the car, which was driven slowly by the woman for about 2km," he said.

"A group of men, believed to be the suspect's friends, later arrived and blocked the woman's vehicle. The group allegedly extorted her by seizing her belongings and damaging the car's windscreen," he said.

ACP Mohd Sohaimi added that acting on information received, a local man in his 30s was detained at about 2am in the wee hours of Sunday morning along Jalan Persisiran Seri Alam in Masai.

He said that the suspect has been remanded for seven days until next Saturday following a court order to facilitate investigations.

ACP Mohd Sohaimi also said checks revealed that the suspect has no prior criminal record but a urine test found him positive for ketamine.

The case is being investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion, Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief causing damage, and Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug use.

ACP Mohd Sohaimi advised the public not to speculate or spread unverified information regarding the case, and urged those with information to contact investigating officer Inspector Muhammad Arif Azlan Ali Ahmad at 011-61863876 or the Seri Alam district headquarters hotline at 07-386 4222.
