QuickCheck: Is there a competition in South Korea where you compete to do... nothing?

COMPETITIONS are fun and thrilling. From sports to games, many people participate to test their skills and endurance.

But is it true that there’s one in South Korea where you do nothing?

Verdict:

TRUE

Yes! It is called the Space Out competition.

Officially launched in 2014, it was the brainchild of South Korean artist Woopsyang, inspired by her personal experience.

The competition aims to change people’s mindset, encouraging them to value rest and challenge the idea that doing nothing is a waste. It is a unique way to manage stress in a fast-paced society.

The only thing you’ll be doing here for 90 minutes is… nothing, meaning no talking, no using phones, no moving around or sleeping.

The event organisers will monitor participants’ heart rates and winners are assessed based on who maintains the lowest and most steady rate.

Other places such as Beijing (China), Taipei (Taiwan), and Tokyo (Japan) now host similar contests, attracting participants from around the world.
