Screen shots from the video that went viral showing a paramotor crashing into a TNB high tension cable in Melaka.

A DRAMATIC 18-second video showing a paramotor apparently crashing during an event in Melaka went viral on social media over the weekend, sparking concern amongst residents.

The footage, which circulated widely on Sunday (Dec 21), appeared to show the aircraft colliding with something mid-flight before plummeting towards the ground.

Did a paramotor operator actually slam into a Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) high-tension cable during the Duyung Kita 2025 International Cultural Run Programme?

Verdict:

TRUE

A paramotor did indeed collide with a TNB cable before plunging into a paddy field in Melaka on Sunday (Dec 21) during the Duyung Kita 2025 International Cultural Run Programme.

Melaka Tengah OCPD Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit said the incident occurred at 8.40am in the paddy field area of Kampung Ku Sayang, Bukit Baru.

Four paramotor operators from a Selangor-based club had come to Melaka with their equipment to add excitement to the programme, which was being held around Stadium Tun Fatimah in Banda Hilir.

Things went wrong when one of the paramotors, operated by a male pilot, experienced technical problems whilst flying over the paddy field area.

The malfunction caused the paramotor to collide with overhead TNB cables before the pilot and aircraft plummeted approximately 30 metres into the paddy field below.

Remarkably, the pilot escaped relatively unscathed, sustaining only minor facial injuries in the crash.

The paramotor equipment suffered minor damage, and crucially, no members of the public were injured in the incident.

TNB personnel quickly arrived at the location to inspect the cables that had been struck during the collision.

Their inspection revealed that despite the impact, no damage had occurred to the electrical infrastructure.

TNB issued a statement on Sunday confirming it had taken note of the incident and was monitoring the situation at the location.

The utility company reassured the public that the incident had not caused any disruption to electricity supply for users in the area.

"We will continue to monitor the situation to ensure the safety of the electrical network is always guaranteed," TNB said in a statement posted on Facebook.

The company also took the opportunity to remind the public about safety precautions around power lines.

TNB advised people to comply with safety guidelines and obtain further information regarding activities prohibited near electricity transmission lines through their website at https://www.tnb.com.my/transmissionlinessafety.
