A VIDEO lasting just one second captured what appeared to be a large striped animal near a plantation area, sending ripples of concern through a rural community.
The brief footage, filmed by a worker on their morning commute, was shared on Facebook and quickly gained attention.
Was a tiger spotted in Jerantut?
Verdict:
TRUE
A tiger is believed to still be roaming near Kampung Membatu, Hulu Tembeling in Jerantut, once again raising concerns amongst residents.
The one-second video of the wild animal sighting was recorded before going viral on Facebook on Monday (Dec 8).
According to the post, the incident was noticed by a Felcra worker whilst on their way to work between 7am and 8am, triggering concerns amongst residents, particularly rubber tappers who go out to earn a living in the early morning.
Pahang Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) director Rozidan Md Yassin said his department received a complaint about the incident, and preliminary investigations by district Perhilitan office staff confirmed the presence of a tiger based on fresh paw prints.
"Through a video recording that went viral today, it is believed to show the same tiger as reported on Nov 22," he said when contacted on Monday.
He said Perhilitan is working to capture the tiger following the frequent discovery of paw prints in plantation areas, residential settlements and nearby locations, causing anxiety amongst the local community.
"We are now actively conducting continuous monitoring through periodic patrols and installation of camera traps to obtain information on the tiger's movements and health status," he said.
"In addition, traps have also been installed at strategic locations for capture purposes," he added.
In this regard, he advised residents to always be vigilant, avoid activities at night in garden areas or forest trails, and carry out garden work in groups.
"Don't act alone but immediately report to Perhilitan if you see any sign of a tiger or find any new evidence," he said.
The tiger's presence near human settlements has raised safety concerns for those who work in plantations and rural areas.
Perhilitan is taking the matter seriously and has deployed resources to track and safely capture the animal.
