TRUE

Besut OCPD Supt Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said police arrested a man suspected of trespassing into a women's prayer area and stealing two handbags while the victims were performing Isyak prayers at Masjid Gong Mak Som, Kampung Raja in Terengganu last Tuesday.

He said the 30-year-old suspect was detained at a house on Jalan Tok Raja, Kampung Gong Tok Tor, Jertih at 7.20am on Thursday.

Supt Azamuddin said the arrest followed a police report received at 8.27pm the same day from a man who was informed by female congregants about the missing bags.

"The complainant reviewed CCTV footage and saw a man entering the women's prayer area before fleeing with the bags.

"The suspect's image captured on CCTV also went viral on social media, and swift action by a team from the Criminal Investigation Division of Besut IPD led to the suspect's arrest," he said in a statement on Friday.

He added that the suspect also tested positive for methamphetamine.

"During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the incident and admitted involvement in another theft case in Jertih, investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code," he said.

Police also seized several items believed to be related to the theft, including a green T-shirt, black trousers, four books, two small bags, keys, prayer beads, and a small zippered bag.

"The case is investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to 10 years and a fine. For subsequent offences, the penalty may include imprisonment, a fine, or whipping," he added.

He also reminded the public not to speculate or spread false information that could disrupt the investigation.

"Any information related to crime can be relayed to Besut IPD at 09-6956222," he added.
