MELAKA: Police arrested a man within 24 hours after he was suspected of using a parang (machete) to injure a teenage girl who was riding pillion on a motorcycle.
Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit said the incident involving the 18-year-old victim occurred at about 4.45pm as the victim and her sister-in-law were travelling home to Batu 9, Tangga Batu, Tanjung Kling.
According to him, initial investigations found that the victim did not know the man who attacked her and confirmed she had no enemies or disagreements with anyone.
"Yes, we have arrested the suspect," he said in a statement here on Tuesday (Oct 21).
He explained that the victim, who is currently being treated in the Yellow Zone of Melaka Hospital, also stated that she had only moved from Tangkak, Johor to Melaka three weeks ago to work as a factory operator.
He said that before the incident, the victim was riding pillion on a motorcycle ridden by her 21-year-old sister-in-law before suddenly feeling pain in her back and asking to stop at the side of the road.
"The victim’s sister-in-law then saw a dark blue motorcycle, ridden by a man wearing a dark jacket and a blue MS helmet, speeding away from the location," he added.
Following the swift action of the police, the suspect was detained in under 24 hours after the incident and is expected to be remanded this morning to assist with further investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a weapon or dangerous means.
Sinar Harian reported on Monday that a teenage girl was seriously injured after being believed to have been stabbed by an unidentified individual while riding a motorcycle in Solok Tangga Batu, Tanjung Kling here on Monday (Oct 20) afternoon.
In that incident, the victim, who was dressed in black, was riding a motorcycle when approached by the suspect on another motorcycle.
