QuickCheck: Is the AKPS advertising to hire Armed Forces veterans?

Talks of a job opportunity tend to spread quickly, regardless of whether it is true or otherwise.

Recently, an advertisement looking for Armed Forces veterans to join the the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) has been circulating on social media.

Is it true that the AKPS has started advertising this?

VERDICT:

FALSE

An advertisement for hiring Armed Forces veterans to join the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) is not from the agency.

In a statement on Tuesday (Oct 14), the AKPS noted the spread of the so-called hiring pamphlet online and confirmed that it was false.

During the recent tabling of Budget 2026 on Oct 10, it was announced that the government has agreed to allocate 220 postings to the AKPS.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the priority will be given to those from the Armed Forces veteran community.

However, AKPS stressed that the matter is still due to be discussed in more detail with the Veterans Affairs Department (JHEV) in the near future.

"As of now, no advertisement for vacancies has been uploaded by the agency, and we urge veterans not to be duped," it said.

UPDATE: On Oct 18, the AKPS finally announced that they are looking to tap into the experience and discipline of military veterans as part of its strategy to build a credible, efficient and respected border force.

Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the recruitment will follow a contractual model similar to the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), which has successfully deployed veterans for nearly four years.

"It is not a permanent civil service appointment," he clarified.
