"It's not illegal if you don't get caught", is a common saying used by someone up to no good to justify their less than righteous deeds.
A video on social media has gone viral, supposedly showing two school students that the saying to heart when they evaded capture from police while riding a motorcycle in Mersing. Is this true?
VERDICT:
TRUE
Mersing deputy OCPD Deputy Supt Mohd Hasrudi Mohd Zain said that the incident occurred at a traffic light near Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar Endau here around 12.30pm last Friday (June 20).
"The policeman on a motorcycle had issued a warning by identifying himself as a policeman and attempted to remove the motorcycle key because the vehicle had a modified licence plate and exhaust, which produced excessive noise. However, the student swatted the officer's hand away and sped off.
"The policeman's action falls under Section 58(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and Section 24(1)(b) of the Police Act 1967," he said when contacted by Bernama on Sunday (June 22).
He added that the policeman was a crime prevention patrol officer from the Endau police station and was carrying out his duties.
At the same time, DSP Hasrudi advised the public not to speculate on the matter.
Earlier, a 13-second video went viral on social media showing a motorcyclist wearing a black shirt attempting to pull the key from a motorcycle ridden by two school students, who managed to avoid him and flee the scene.
