REPORTS of audacious robberies often capture the public's attention, especially when strange and unusual tactics are involved.

Recently, a video surfaced showing a masked man allegedly using chilli powder during a jewellery store heist.

Did this event actually happen?

A masked man robbed a jewellery shop on Jalan Pandak Mayah 5 in Kuah, Langkawi, by throwing chilli powder at the staff before shattering the display case with a machete at 11.48am on Wednesday (June 18). A video of the incident later went viral online.

"The 45-year-old suspect acted alone and fled with jewellery estimated to be worth RM50,000," said Langkawi OCPD ACP Shariman Ashari, adding that the shop owner, aged 69, and a 60-year-old woman were present in the store at the time of the incident.

"The suspect attempted to escape but was pursued by the store owner and nearby bystander,

"He was eventually apprehended by police officers patrolling the area," said ACP Ashari, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 392/397 of the Penal Code for armed robbery, which carries a penalty of up to 14 years in prison and whipping if convicted.
