QuickCheck: Did an irate man in JB set his wife's car on fire?

SOME marital disputes have been known to turn fiery.

One man in Johor Baru, however, took this literally by allegedly torching his wife's car.

In a video that went viral on social media, the culprit blocks the woman's car with his multi-purpose vehicle before pouring petrol on the bonnet and setting it on fire.

It is claimed that the incident took place on a busy stretch of Jalan Tebrau in the city on Sunday (Feb 2) night, and that there were four people in the car at the time.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the incident occurred at 10.20pm on Sunday.

"We are investigating the case as mischief by fire, involving a car at a traffic light junction near a private hospital on Jalan Tebrau here," he told the media on Monday (Feb 3).

"A video of the incident went viral on social media.

"Based on the video, a white car belonging to a 21-year-old local woman was doused with petrol by a 25-year-old man, her husband, and set on fire."

ACP Raub said the suspect and victim had a misunderstanding.

"Based upon CCTV footage, the suspect, driving a luxury MPV, blocked the victim's car.

“The suspect then poured petrol on the car’s bonnet and set it on fire before driving away," he said.

ACP Raub said the car's four occupants escaped unharmed.

The victim subsequently lodged a police report claiming she had suffered RM90,000 in damages, he added.

ACP Raub said police were tracking down the suspect and urged anyone with information to contact the Johor Baru South police hotline at 07-2182323.

Larkin fire station operations commander Wan Azri Wan Adannan said 10 firemen were deployed to the scene.

“When we reached the area, the team (found) a car on fire and immediately began operations to put the blaze out.

“The car was 80% damaged," he said.
