QuickCheck: Is it true that dolphins don't drink water?

OF the over 40 dolphin species, killer whales (orcas) are the largest, while bottlenose dolphins are the most common.

When you see pods of these majestic marine mammals swimming in the open ocean, have you ever thought about how these animals hydrate?

Do they drink salt water, or do they have to find a source of fresh water to drink?

Or, more astonishingly, is it true that dolphins don't drink water?

Verdict:

TRUE

Due to their physiology, dolphins have a fairly low chance of getting dehydrated compared to land animals that are constantly exposed to the sun.

Instead of drinking water, dolphins obtain moisture through the food (fish and other prey) they consume.

Other marine mammals, such as whales and seals, exhibit similar behaviour.

That’s not all; dolphins don’t chew and swallow their food whole.

This reduces the risk of prey getting stuck in their throats. Instead of chewing, their teeth are primarily used to grasp food.
