MERCURY is the only metallic element that remains liquid at standard pressure and temperature. It can be absorbed through the skin and used as a whitener.
However, it could also cause damage to the brain, nervous system and kidneys, as well as interfere with the brain development of young or unborn children.
Recently, it was discovered that a cosmetic product sold in stores contained this poisonous element.
Is this true?
Verdict:
TRUE
The Health Ministry has revoked the notification of the cosmetic product "JL Fara Seaweed" because it contained mercury, a scheduled poison, and is no longer allowed to be sold in Malaysia, reported Bernama.
Because of this, the ministry urged the public to refrain from buying the product and ordered sellers and distributors to halt its sales and distribution immediately.
"The sale and distribution of the cosmetic product violate the Control of Drug and Cosmetics Regulations 1984," said the ministry in a statement on Friday (Jan 17).
Individuals who commit an offence under the Drugs and Cosmetics Control Regulations 1984 may be subject to a maximum fine of RM25,000 or imprisonment not exceeding three years or both for the first offence and a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment not exceeding five years or both for subsequent offences.
A company can be fined up to RM50,000 for the first offence and up to RM100,000 for subsequent offences.
Those currently using the cosmetic product are advised to stop immediately and seek advice from a health professional if they experience any discomfort or adverse effects.
