QuickCheck: Is the govt's cybersecurity agency making phone calls to people?

CALLS from government agencies tend to get taken seriously, especially when they're from an agency that, among other things, helps keep people safe online.

One such agency is CyberSecurity Malaysia, the government's electronic information and network security specialist.

Recently, it has been claimed that CyberSecurity Malaysia officers are contacting people through phone calls. Is this true?

VERDICT

FALSE

In a statement on its official social media pages, CyberSecurity Malaysia advised the public to be careful as people have been impersonating its officers in calls.

"CyberSecurity Malaysia does not make calls as claimed.

"This agency also wishes to state that it has never sent messages through WhatsApp, SMS or any other social media platforms or via email.

"As such ... lodge a report with us through cyber999@cybersecurity.my if (you) face such a situation," added CyberSecurity Malaysia.
