QuickCheck: Was a woman caught stealing jewellery from children at a carnival?

WHEN we go to carnivals, we hope for a fun day out with the family – and having someone coming after your children to steal their jewellery would be the last thing on your mind. Recently, a video went viral with a claim that a woman had been going around stealing necklaces from children at the Karnival Jom Heboh at Stadium Seksyen 13 in Shah Alam.

Is there any truth to this rumour?

Verdict:

TRUE

In a statement, Shah Alam OCPD ACP Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim confirmed what was seen in the viral video and said that a woman was arrested shortly after an incident at 5.40pm on Sunday (June 3).

He said that prior to the arrest, the woman had stolen a chain belonging to a four-year-old girl by cutting it with an object and then pulling it.

"Shortly after the incident, a 35-year-old woman was caught at the scene," said Mohd Iqbal, adding that a police report was then made at 8.09pm on the same day after the incident.

He added that the suspect had six prior cases in her criminal record linked to theft, and had been remanded until Tuesday (June 6) to assist with the investigation into the case.

"Anyone with information can call investigating officer Sjn Mohd Norazizi Samsuri at 014-947 2881," he added.
