QuickCheck: Is the PETRONAS Twin Towers' sky bridge fully attached to either buildings?

THE PETRONAS Twin Towers are an iconic landmark in the Kuala Lumpur skyline. They were once the tallest buildings in the world until 2004, connected by a sky bridge between the two structures.

Is it true that the bridge is 100% attached to the towers?

Verdict:

FALSE

It may cause some visitors to feel nervous, but it’s true that the 58.4 metre-long sky bridge between the PETRONAS Twin Towers is not fully attached to the main building.

But rest assured, it is for safety reasons.

"Engineers deliberately designed the sky bridge this way to give allowance for small movements during high winds and other unpleasant weather.

"This prevents the bridge from breaking away from the towers," read a description on the official website for the PETRONAS Twin Towers.

The double-decker bridge weighs 750 tonnes and connects the two skyscrapers on Levels 41 and 42.

While the bridge is at 170 metres above the ground, the twin towers soar at 451.8 metres tall.

Completed in June 1996, the towers were considered the world’s tallest buildings until 2004, when it was surpassed by the Taipei 101.

However, the 88-storey twin towers are still the world’s tallest twin buildings, according to the Guinness World Records website.

And for Malaysians, it remains as one of the proud symbols of our country’s capital.
