QuickCheck: Is Bursa Malaysia's customer service issuing messages to add a WhatsApp contact?

Over the course of a regular day, we often receive all sorts of messages including bank alerts, information from telcos as well as an assortment of spam, and some of these can sound more legitimate than others.

Recently, a message has been sent out claiming to be from a “Cindy” in Bursa Malaysia's customer service department. Is this message – which asks the recipient to contact someone via WhatsApp – legitimate?

VERDICT:

FALSE

In a statement, Bursa Malaysia said the messages are, in fact, a scam.

“These messages were not issued by Bursa Malaysia. Do not reply to messages like this and do not contact the number provided,” it said.

It added that anyone who received the message should verify with Bursa Malaysia.

“You should always verify with Bursa2u at bursa2u@bursamalaysia.com or call Bursa Malaysia’s Help Centre at (+603-2732 0067) before making any investment decisions,” it said.

“You can also check the Securities Commission Investor Alert List at (http://sc.com.my/investor-alert). If you have been scammed, contact the National Scam Response Centre hotline at 997,” added Bursa Malaysia.
