QuickCheck: Can vehicle owners remove their road tax stickers from Feb 10 itself?

THE Transport Ministry announced on Friday (Feb 10) that it is phasing out physical road tax for private motor vehicles in favour of a digital counterpart.

Does this mean that starting on Friday, all private motor vehicle owners can remove the road tax stickers from their windscreens effective immediately?

Verdict:

FALSE

While it is true that the ministry is introducing a digital road tax system that does not require a physical sticker, it does not mean vehicle owners can take down their stickers just yet.

The ministry said it was implementing the new system in phases starting with private vehicles, and owners would have to register their vehicles with the Road Transport Department.

Owners would have to visit https://public.jpj.gov.my to register for their digital road tax, or e-LKM, from Friday.

Bear in mind that JPJ's website is currently experiencing abnormally high traffic at the moment so it might take a while before you can even log on to complete the registration.

After registering with JPJ, vehicle owners will then be able to legally drive their vehicle on the road without displaying their road tax.

For those not ready to go digital or who are unable to access the site for whatever reason, your road tax will automatically be digitalised once the implementation phases are complete.
