QuickCheck: Can documents apart from your IC be used to verify your identity on polling day?

AS POLLING day is fast approaching, many of us are getting ready physically and mentally to face the crowds to line up and perform our civic duty. But in order to do so you have to be able to prove at the polling station that you are really you.

Most people will simply produce their MyKad but for those who do not have their IC on them, is there truth to the claim that there are other documents that can be shown to the EC officer at the polling centre?

Verdict:

TRUE

While the most convenient method of proving your identity at the polling station is to simply produce your MyKad, the Election Commission does actually accept four other documents.

According to a post made by the EC on its Facebook page, voters can also use a Malaysian issued passport, driving licence, temporary identification card or even a receipt from the National Registration Department confirming you have lost your actual MyKad.

While proving your identity is paramount, it's also important to be registered and to turn up at the correcting polling centre or risk being turned away.

Voters can check their registration status as well as their registered polling station by the EC MySPR Semak page.
