QuickCheck: Are syndicates targeting travellers who stop at highway R&Rs?

A VIRAL WhatsApp message has been making its rounds saying that travellers using the North-South Expressway (NSE) should not stop at R&R rest stops as unscrupulous tow truck operators and mechanics might target them.

Is this true?

Verdict:

FALSE

According to a statement from PLUS Malaysia Berhad on Tuesday (July 5), there is no truth to this.

PLUS said it had been continuously working with the police to ensure that the safety of road users is maintained at the highest standard.

Part of its efforts involve protecting road users from falling victim to such syndicates and their tactics.

PLUS said that its 500-man highway patrol team (PLUSRonda), set up together with the police, frequently patrols the NSE and is there to assist road users when the need arises.

In addition to accident management, the team also looks out for traffic offences and any other illegal activities on the road.

PLUS urged road users to contact its Traffic Monitoring Centre if they experience any difficulties or witness illegal activities on the highway.

The centre is open 24 hours a day and can be reached through its hotline at 1-800 88 000.
