QuickCheck: Was an e-hailing driver stabbed in the neck as claimed in viral videos?

Several videos have gone viral on social media claiming to show an e-hailing driver being stabbed in the neck by an armed carjacker. Did this happen as claimed?

In a statement Tuesday (Jan 25), Sentul OCPD Asst Comm Beh Eng Lai said the carjacking occurred on Monday (Jan 24).

"The victim had picked up the suspect in Putrajaya and when they reached Sentul Market, the suspect asked to pay for the ride via online banking," said Supt Beh.

"When the victim was searching for his bank account details, the suspect stabbed him in the neck with a sharp object," he added.

He said the victim was then dragged out of the car before the carjacker took off with the vehicle.

"Passers-by rushed to assist the victim and the 47-year-old e-hailing driver was sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital via an ambulance," he said.

Supt Beh added that the investigation into the case led to the arrest of a 23-year-old man around noon on Tuesday.
