SUNGAI PETANI: Police have arrested a 35-year-old man over a viral video showing him allegedly driving recklessly in a red multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) bearing the word "Bomba".

Kuala Muda OCPD Asst Comm Hanyan Ramlan said investigations found that the man had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder nine years ago but was believed to have discontinued treatment about two years ago.

"Police received a report on Tuesday (Oct 27) following the video's circulation.

"The man was arrested in Bandar Puteri Jaya, where the vehicle and several other items were seized," he told reporters at district police headquarters here on Thursday (Oct 29).

ACP Hanyan said the man owned the MPV, held a valid driving licence, has no criminal record, and tested negative for drugs.

The case is being investigated under Section 170 of the Penal Code for impersonating a public servant and Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.

The man was remanded for one day before being admitted to Hospital Sungai Petani for treatment and further monitoring.

The viral video showed a red MPV marked "Bomba" being driven recklessly, with the driver berating other road users who did not give way.

This prompted the Kedah Fire and Rescue Department to issue a statement on Wednesday (Oct 28) that the vehicle in the video was neither an official department vehicle nor did it belong to any Volunteer Fire Brigade in the state. – Bernama
